Philippe,
I work for Data Storage Group, have from almost the beginning, and can only wonder how you came across our name, product and information.

I used to work on the Backup Exec product back when it was Arcada BackupExec, then Conner Peripherals, then Seagage Software, then Veritas and now Symantec. I left in 2001 or so.

Here is what we are trying to do.
Backup or data protection is going through some dramatic changes, the first in many years. We want to lead that change.

1. We want to make it simple and easy to backup and restore data.
2. Tape is becoming expensive relative to disk and has always been difficult to work with. So we backup exclusively to disk. Our backend data store is a highly efficent data store, that stores only unique data.
3. Since we hold all of the customer's data in deduplicated backend store, we can provide e-discovery (content indexed searching) across the same set of data that the customer uses for data protection. Previously, they had to find the tapes they wanted, mount them and restore them to disk, then index and search the data.
4. Since we hold a server's data in our deduplicated backend store, we can provide very efficient space management for the server's primary data. We simply replace files with a placeholder that contains the information required to retrieve the file fromt the deduplicated backend store. To the user, it is transparent. They open a file, our filter driver kicks in and reads the placeholder and satisfies the i/o requests from the data store.

I'd love to hear from you. My email address is scott.moreland@datastor.com
