Kubernetes control from AppsCode

AppsCode, a young player in infrastructure control founded in 2016, participated recently in The IT Press Tour, organized in London. It was the perfect time, during KubeCon, to get a company and product update. Tamal Saha, its CEO, is a true believer in Kubernetes.

It all started with Kubernetes in 2015 and very early the founding team recognized the need to offer a production grade Kubernetes-native data platform.

According to Saha, enterprises rapidly adopted Kubernetes on-premises and in the cloud to maintain agility in IT deployment, configuration and management and more globally make their IT environment independent of any clouds, sites or data centers.

Kubernetes introduced a stateless model but limits the adoption. At the same time stateful is what interests an enterprise but it is obviously more complicated to manage at scale and across clusters. AppsCode also addresses database provisioning, backup and recovery, secret and user management and cross cluster access.

The team has developed 4 solutions: KubeDB, KubeStash, Voyager and KubeVault.

KubeDB
is a database-as-a-service product offering an intuitive dashboard to automate database deployment and provisioning wherever run the engine. Today, it supports more than 20 databases. This product competes against AWS RDS.

KubeStash targets backup and recovery for Kubernetes workloads, database and persistent volumes.

Voyager plays in the traffic management sector integrated with HAProxy.

KubeVault is dedicated to HashiCorp Vault deployment and management.

The company tried several go-to-market models and finally adopted a single paid edition with self-service 30 days trial and it seems to work, at least better than previous tries. White-labeling for KubeDB was also tested and it appeared to be an interesting business path. So at the end targets are end-users wishing to control on-premoises databases and this just mentioned oem ecosystem. In terms of fee, the memory-based pricing has been adopted with pay-as-you-go.
